Hsing-Chwen Giselle Hsin, piano
Steinway Artist Hsing-Chwen Giselle Hsin (www.pianistHsin.com) is one of the most esteemed pianists from Asia. She is also a piano professor at the Institute of Music,National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (Hsinchu), as well as the National Taiwan Normal University (Taipei).She has adjudicated, lectured and given master classes nationwide and internationally, such as at Portugal’s Coimbra World Piano Meeting, England’s Royal Northern College of Music and the Yehudi Menuhin School, and Singapore’s Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, Germany’s SRIMF, and Israel’s Tel Aviv International Piano Competition.
As a concerto soloist, she has performed with major orchestras in Taiwan including the National Symphony Orchestra (among the performances is Taiwan’s premier of Scriabin’s Piano Concerto), the Taipei Symphony Orchestra, Taipei Philharmonic, and National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, and orchestras of Hong Kong (HK Philharmonic), China (Guangzhou and Hunan), USA, England, and Switzerland; as a recitalist, she regularly performs in the National Concert Hall, Taipei, and has live recorded several recitals on Australia and Hong Kong’s radio stations. Among published CDs, her recording of Mozart, Ravel and Chopin, published by Decca of Taiwan, has resulted in the selection of Editor's Choice in the All Music Magazine. She has further recorded J. S. Bach and Ma Shui-Long’s compositions, for the latter her recording was nominated the best album in the Golden Melody Award in 2023.
At an early age, she went from Taiwan to study at England’s renowned Yehudi Menuhin School.At 17, she performed as a duo with Sir Yehudi Menuhin at the Upottery Festival, England.She wasa Silver Medalist at the Mozart Bicentenary Piano Competition of Asia, and a winner at New York's Chopin Piano Competition of 1989.In 1994 after returning to Taiwan,she was honored by its President to perform at the Presidential Hall Concert. Prominent artists with whom she has partnered include violinists Cho-Liang Lin, Qian Zhou, Nai-Yuan Hu,James Buswell; violist Hsin-Yun Huang, and cellist Gary Hoffman. In 2005, Prof. Hsin founded a leading chamber group of Taiwan, the ChiaoTa Chamber Ensemble, representing NCTU’s Institute of Music and dedicated to the promotion, including the premiering, of classic and contemporary chamber music repertoire. She has in recent years given several solo recitals at the National Concert Hall in Taipei, where her Piano Trio Eurasiamerica also gave a concert, prior to its tour in Germany in 2021. In 2023, major performances included several solo recitals and concerto performances, the latter taking places at the National Concert Hall in Taipei, and Weiwuying in Kaohsiung.
While holding a Doctorate in piano performance from Stony Brook University in New York, and the prestigious Chappell Gold Medal from the Royal College of Music, her mentors have included Andras Schiff, Leon Fleisher, Louis Kentner, Vlado Perlemuter, Aube Tzerko, Siao-PeiYang, Simon Nicholls, Kendall Taylor, and Gilbert Kalish.
