FAQ
-
There is no age limit for the festival.
-
Our two biggest groups are high school/teenagers and college/graduate students. There are also students 14 and under who must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The festival can also accommodate adult students.
While the festival is an intensive musical experience for advanced musicians, the unique structure allows accommodation of different levels. There is a point where age becomes irrelevant when considering the musical level and experience of a student. In the arts, some people progress very fast at a young age and reach a more advanced level than some college students. InterHarmony recognizes that musical mastery is a life-long journey. The staff’s musical expertise and experience in working with so many musicians allows them to place students in chamber music according to level. The Artist Faculty work closely with the staff based on recordings, resume material, and knowledge of the students’ experience and/or personality to assign pieces that will provide the best experience and room for growth for their current level.
-
Students are chosen for acceptance by a committee of staff and Artist Faculty based on their recordings and application material.
-
Applications are considered on a first-come, first serve basis. Normally you will receive an answer within one to two weeks of submitting all application materials.
-
While InterHarmony is not responsible for student supervision, the town is very safe. Students 14 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and if you are a parent concerned about safety, we suggest you attend with your minor students.
-
It is very common for family members and friends to attend as guests of the students at the festival.
-
Yes. Students receive digital certificates of completion they can print after the festival. There are other certificates or digital badges they may earn at InterHarmony.
-
Yes! The majority of cellists and all double bassists and harpists rent instruments at the festival. Some violinists and violists also decide to rent instruments so they can travel before or after the festival without worry. InterHarmony helps arrange for a luthier to transport rental string instruments to the festival where students can pick them up on the first day. InterHarmony arranges harp rentals and transportation from Salvi Harps. Harp students share the instruments, and therefore split the rental cost between them.
How it works for instrument rentals is that InterHarmony takes a security deposit of $150 from each student renting an instrument that is returned if there are no damages to the instrument in September when the staff returns from Europe. Students may also need to sign a form that if there are damages to the instrument, they will not receive their security deposit back. You can view rental costs on the Instrument Rental Form here. Subtract $150 from the cost to get the price of the rental shown on the form, since the $150 is the security deposit. InterHarmony does not receive any profit from providing rental instruments. The rental cost is for instrument rental and transport only.
Note: If cellists decide to bring their own instrument to the festival, it is recommended for the cellist to buy a seat on the plane for your cello. It is not safe to put cellos in the baggage area because they are almost always damaged or ruined by baggage handlers, and travel insurance will not cover anywhere near the cost of the instruments.
